There is no official figure regarding the length of the GTA VI story. Rockstar Games has not communicated how many hours it takes to complete the main campaign, so any specific number you see presented as confirmed is not. This article offers a reasoned estimate based on the company’s track record, not verified data.
Why we use GTA V and RDR2 as a reference
To get an idea of the expected length range, it makes sense to look at Rockstar Games’ two most recent open-world releases. According to common community estimates for completing only the main story, without side activities:
- Grand Theft Auto V (2013): around 31 hours to complete the main plot, split among the three playable protagonists.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018): around 40 hours to complete the main story, one of the most extensive scripts the studio has published.
These figures correspond to common community length estimates for those two specific games, not official GTA VI data. We bring them up here solely as verifiable historical context regarding previous releases.
What Rockstar has said about the game’s scale
Rockstar Games has described GTA VI as their most ambitious project to date, with a map that combines Vice City with the state of Leonida and a shared narrative between two playable protagonists, Lucia and Jason. The company has not translated that stated ambition into any number of hours, so we cannot turn “the most ambitious game” into a specific number without speculating.
Factors that could affect the length
There are several elements specific to this release that could influence the time needed to complete the story, although none allow calculating an exact figure:
- Two playable protagonists. GTA V split its plot among three characters with specific missions for each. If GTA VI maintains a similar structure between Lucia and Jason, that tends to lengthen the total content of the campaign.
- World density. The more areas of the map that are part of mandatory plot missions, the more travel time and narrative content can accumulate.
- Narrative pacing. Rockstar has tended in its latest releases towards slower, more cinematic narratives, as seen in RDR2, which usually translates to longer playthroughs than in games with a more direct pace.
What these estimates don’t include
Neither the GTA V nor the RDR2 figure includes side activities, collectibles, 100% completion, or time spent in online mode. GTA Online, in particular, has generated literally thousands of hours of accumulated content over the years, something that makes no sense to compare to the length of a main campaign.
What we will do when real data is available
As soon as there is length information based on actual playthroughs —whether from specialized press with early access or from players after the November 19, 2026 launch— we will replace these estimates with verified data.
While we wait for real length data, review everything we know about GTA 6 so far and the exact release date.
