GTA VI launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Rockstar has not announced a PS4 or Xbox One version, and nothing suggests it will. If you play on a last-generation console, you will need to upgrade to play GTA VI.

Why it cannot run on PS4 or Xbox One

GTA V released on two generations because it was designed for PS3 and Xbox 360 and then adapted to the next ones. GTA VI was made the other way round: from scratch for current hardware. And the differences are not just about graphics:

  • Storage. PS5 and Xbox Series use SSDs that read thousands of megabytes per second; PS4 and Xbox One use mechanical hard drives at around 100 MB/s. A world as dense as Leonida, with so many people and so much traffic, needs to stream data constantly while you move fast. A mechanical drive cannot keep up.
  • Processor and memory. The 2013 consoles have a much slower processor and 8 GB of shared memory, compared with 16 GB on current consoles.
  • Cutting it down is not enough. Lowering resolution or effects does not solve world streaming or crowd simulation; the game would have to be rebuilt.

Even on PS5 and Xbox Series X it runs at 30 FPS, according to Rockstar, which shows how demanding it is.

Beware of scams. If you see ads promising a “GTA 6 beta for PS4” or a download for an older console, it is a fraud.

Which console to buy for GTA VI

Official prices in Spain (Sony raised them in April 2026 and Microsoft in August 2026); prices vary by country:

ConsoleOfficial price (Spain)Who it is for
Xbox Series S 512 GB€499.99The cheapest, but tight on space
Xbox Series S 1 TB€599.99The budget option with room to spare
PS5 Digital Edition€599.99If you buy digitally
PS5 with disc drive€649.99If you want disc games (GTA VI’s boxed edition is a code, not a disc)
Xbox Series X€799.99The most powerful Xbox
PS5 Pro€899.99Only with a 4K TV and if price is no issue

The Series S runs at a lower resolution than the others but plays the same game. Its issue is space: Rockstar has not given GTA VI’s size, and on the 512 GB model you will have to delete other games.

Retailers may sell above or below the official price, so compare before buying. See also PS5 or Xbox Series X for GTA 6.
