GTA 6 at 30 FPS: what Rockstar has said about the 60 FPS mode

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, has confirmed that GTA VI runs at 30 FPS on consoles and that the 60 mode is not decided. We analyze what it means and what the experts say.

One of the most repeated questions since the Extended Look now has an official answer, and it is not the one a large part of the community expected: Grand Theft Auto VI runs at 30 frames per second on consoles, and Rockstar Games has not confirmed that a 60 FPS mode will exist.

What Rockstar has said

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, has confirmed that the game currently runs at 30 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that the technical team has not yet decided if they will offer a performance mode at 60 frames per second.

It is worth reading the statement carefully, because it has been cited in very different ways:

  • It is confirmed: the current performance of the game is 30 FPS.
  • It is not confirmed: that there will be a 60 FPS mode.
  • Nor is it ruled out: Rockstar has not said that it will not exist.

That is to say, whoever categorically states that GTA VI will have a performance mode, or that it never will, is going further than what the studio has said.

Why 30 and not 60

The most cited technical analysis is that of Digital Foundry, which considers that reaching 60 FPS in the current generation would be extremely difficult. The reason is not the graphical power, but the processor.

GTA VI poses a particularly demanding simulation for the CPU:

  • Density of characters and traffic much higher than in previous installments.
  • Dynamic weather system.
  • Physics simulation across the entire environment.
  • Advanced artificial intelligence in traffic and pedestrian reactions.

A 60 FPS mode would require calculating all that simulation in half the time. It is not a matter of lowering the resolution: the leading load here is that of the processor, and that is not alleviated by cutting pixels.

The specific case of PS5 Pro

Here is the nuance that most surprises those who were considering buying the upgraded console: PS5 Pro does not solve this problem.

The Pro offers significantly more graphical power than the original PS5, but uses practically the same CPU, with a slight overclock to raise the frequencies. Since the limit in GTA VI is the processor, that graphical improvement does not translate into double the frames per second.

That is why analysts take for granted that the game will run at 30 FPS on all console platforms, including the Pro.

The intermediate possibility: 40 FPS

The option that analysts do see as viable is a 40 FPS mode, which requires a 120 Hz compatible television. It is an intermediate point that other large-scale games have already used: it feels noticeably more fluid than 30 without demanding double the work from the CPU.

We insist that Rockstar has not mentioned this option. It is a hypothesis from analysts, not an announced plan.

What this means in practice

If you are going to play GTA VI on November 19, 2026:

  • On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S you will play at 30 FPS with dynamic resolution and image reconstruction techniques.
  • Buying a PS5 Pro will not give you 60 FPS in this specific game, so if that was your only motivation, you should reconsider it.
  • A later patch is still possible. Rockstar has added performance modes to previous games after launch, but nothing is announced.

Is it a problem?

It depends on what you expect. A locked 30 FPS is the historical standard for major Rockstar releases: both GTA V back in the day and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched like this on the consoles of their generation, and neither is considered a technical failure because of it.

What has changed is the expectation. After several years of a generation where almost all major releases offer a choice of quality mode and performance mode, finding a single 30 FPS option is striking, and explains a large part of the debate.

We will update this article as soon as Rockstar Games officially confirms or rules out the 60 FPS mode.

Frequently asked questions

How many FPS does GTA 6 run at?
At 30 frames per second on consoles, as confirmed by Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North. It is the current performance of the game in its development state.
Will there be a 60 FPS mode in GTA 6?
Rockstar has neither confirmed nor ruled it out. The technical team has not yet decided if they will offer a performance mode on consoles.
Will GTA 6 run at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro?
The analysts at Digital Foundry consider it very difficult. PS5 Pro improves graphical power, but it uses practically the same CPU as the original PS5, and the bottleneck in GTA VI is precisely the processor.
Could there be a 40 FPS mode?
Analysts see it as a reasonable intermediate possibility on compatible 120 Hz televisions, although Rockstar has not mentioned anything about it.
