On 27 August 2026, Rockstar premiered the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look on Netflix: around 26 minutes of gameplay captured on a PS5. It is the most complete look at the game so far. Here is what it showed, without adding anything it did not.
Why Rockstar chose Netflix for the premiere is covered separately in the Extended Look premiered on Netflix.
Police and the wanted level
This is the biggest change from GTA V:
- The sixth wanted star is back, after GTA V dropped it.
- Police remember you: your face, what you are wearing and whether you are armed. Getting out of sight is no longer enough; to lose them you need to change your clothes or appearance.
- Police do not appear on the minimap. A “focus” mode highlights them instead.
- The minimap is 3D, with buildings shown in relief.
- In the chase shown, you could shoot from the car, even at helicopters.
Combat
- A more modern, cover-based third-person shooting system, with free aim and animations that adapt to the environment.
- Slow-motion aiming, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2’s Dead Eye, that highlights enemy weak spots such as the head, hands or joints.
- A redesigned HUD compared with GTA V.
Karma and criminal profile
- There is a karma system: petting dogs adds to it, robbing stores takes away.
- Your actions build a criminal profile. Even details such as putting rubbish in the bin count.
Jason and Lucia
- Character switching: instant when they are together; a few seconds when they are apart. The video showed Lucia base jumping off a skyscraper and switching straight to Jason on the sofa at home.
- You shape their relationship through your decisions and the time they spend together.
- Talking to people: hold a trigger to choose between several responses, as in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Daily life and activities
- Your own home: you can relax, open the fridge to pick something to eat or drink, or watch TV.
- Activities: circuit racing, jet skis, airboats, canoeing, scuba diving, basketball and weightlifting.
- Clothing: lots of variety, from tank tops to sequin dresses and formal wear.
- Stealing cars: modern cars need a key cloner; older ones do not.
- Areas with far more people on the streets than GTA V.
Performance: 30 FPS on console
After the premiere, Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, confirmed the game runs at 30 FPS on console, PS5 Pro included, and said he would need to check with the technical team whether there will be a 60 FPS mode at launch or later. Rockstar has not committed to one. We cover it in GTA 6 at 30 or 60 FPS.
What was not shown
The video showed no online mode, which is not part of the launch, and nothing about a PC version. For what has been revealed since (map, wildlife and weather), see our summary of Game Informer’s cover story in what’s new in Leonida.
All the official videos, in order, are in GTA 6 trailers.
